HZ-175 Long-Barrel Centrifugal Barrel Finisher
HZ-175 High-Energy Centrifugal Barrel Finishing Machine
The Longest-Barrel Centrifugal Finisher in the HZ-Series: 48″ Barrels for Full-Length Firearms, Blades, and Munitions at Production Scale
The HZ-175 has the longest barrels of any centrifugal barrel finisher Mass Finishing makes. At 48″ long and 8″ in diameter, these barrels accept parts up to 47″—nearly four feet—including complete rifle barrels, full-length shotgun barrels, machetes, long chef’s knives, swords, extended turbine shafts, and large-format munitions components that no other HZ-Series machine can accommodate.
The HZ-175 shares its target industries with the HZ-85 (firearms, knives, aerospace), but it operates at a fundamentally different scale. Where the HZ-85 handles parts up to 33″ in barrels with 3 cubic feet of total capacity, the HZ-175 extends to 47″ parts with 6 cubic feet of capacity—double the batch volume. For production firearms manufacturers, large-scale knife companies, and munitions operations that have outgrown the HZ-85, the HZ-175 is the next step without moving to the high-capacity class.
The 8″ barrel diameter places the HZ-175 between the high-efficiency models (~6″ bore) and the wide-diameter class (10–12″ bore). This means it handles parts that are wider than what the HZ-60 or HZ-85 can accept—up to 7″ in diameter—while maintaining the long, narrow barrel geometry that concentrates media pressure along the full length of each part.

Built Different: How the HZ-175’s Design Serves Production-Scale Finishing
The HZ-175 isn’t just a longer version of the HZ-85—it’s a different machine design. Several features are unique to the HZ-175 or differ significantly from other models in the series:
- Hinged barrel lids: Unlike every other HZ-Series model, the HZ-175’s barrel lids don’t detach from the barrel. Each lid has 5 spring-loaded hinges along the back edge—the operator unlatches the front locks and flips the lid open. This design is faster for loading and unloading because there’s no lid to set aside, carry, or reattach. For firearms and knife manufacturers running continuous batches, the hinged design saves minutes per changeover that compound across a full shift.
- Automatic door opener (standard): The HZ-175’s main access door opens and closes at the push of a button. On smaller models, the door is manual or the auto-opener is an add-on. On the HZ-175, the door’s size and weight make the auto-opener a practical necessity that comes standard.
- 1/2″ barrel liners: The HZ-175’s polyurethane barrel liners are double the thickness of standard models (1/2″ vs. 1/4″). The additional liner material absorbs more impact energy and extends liner life under the heavier media loads and longer cycle times that production-scale finishing demands.
15 HP motor with variable frequency control: The same motor power as the HZ-160, but driving longer barrels through a narrower bore. Variable speed reaches 150 RPM—adjustable from cosmetic blade polishing at lower speeds to aggressive deburring on hardened firearm components at higher speeds.
HZ-175 Features and Benefits
48″ barrels—the longest in the HZ-Series
No other Mass Finishing machine accepts parts this long. Full-length rifle barrels (up to 26″ and beyond with compensators), complete shotgun barrels, machetes, long chef’s knives, swords, and extended munitions components all fit within the 47″ part envelope.
84 divider chambers—the most of any model
With 20 divider slots per barrel (21 chambers each, 84 total), the HZ-175 offers more part separation than any other machine in the lineup. Knife manufacturers can isolate individual blades across 84 compartments per cycle. Firearms manufacturers can separate barrels, actions, and stocks across multiple customer orders.
8″ barrel bore—wider than the HZ-60/85
The HZ-175’s 8″ bore is 2″ wider than the HZ-60 and HZ-85, accommodating parts up to 7″ in diameter. This handles wider firearm receivers, broader knife handles, and bulkier munitions casings that the narrower high-efficiency barrels can’t fit.
Hinged lids for faster changeovers
Spring-loaded hinged lids flip open and stay open while you load or unload. No detaching, carrying, or reattaching barrel covers. For production environments running 10+ batches per shift, this design shaves minutes off every changeover—time that adds up to significant throughput gains over a full day.
Less media per part than wide-diameter models
The HZ-175’s 8″ bore uses less media per cycle than wide-diameter machines with 10–12″ barrels, while still delivering production-scale capacity. For operations running multiple cycles daily, the media savings reduce per-part consumable costs over time.
1/2″ barrel liners for extended life
Double the standard liner thickness means longer service intervals between replacements. For firearms and knife manufacturers running aggressive deburring cycles with ceramic media, the additional liner material absorbs more wear before requiring field replacement—reducing maintenance downtime and liner costs.
HZ-175 Barrels
The HZ-175 features four hexagonal barrels measuring 48″ L x 8″ D—the longest barrels in the entire HZ-Series. Unlike all other models, the HZ-175 uses hinged barrel lids rather than removable ones.
Hinged-Lid Design for Production Speed
Each barrel lid is attached with 5 spring-loaded hinges along the back edge. The operator unlatches the front locking mechanisms and flips the lid open—the springs hold it in place while parts and media are loaded or unloaded. This is a deliberate design choice for production environments: there are no covers to set aside, no cover lift needed, and no risk of dropping a heavy, media-laden lid during changeover. The hinged design reduces barrel access time and eliminates one of the most physically demanding steps in operating larger centrifugal barrel finishers.
84 Chambers for Maximum Part Isolation
Each HZ-175 barrel has 20 divider slots, creating up to 21 isolated chambers per barrel—84 separate compartments across all four barrels. This is the highest chamber count of any HZ-Series machine and it’s specifically valuable for:
- Production knife finishing: A batch of 80+ individual knife blades, each isolated in its own compartment, can be processed in a single cycle with no blade-to-blade contact.
- Firearms component batching: Barrels, receivers, slides, and small parts from multiple production orders can run simultaneously, each group in its own chamber range, with full traceability.
- Munitions processing: Different caliber casings or projectile bodies can be separated by size or type within the same cycle, maximizing machine utilization without mixing production lots.
Barrel liners are hot-poured polyurethane at 1/2″ thickness (double the standard 1/4″). Dividers are NYLOIL® cast nylon with built-in oil lubrication.

Choose the HZ-175 if your parts exceed 33″ in length, your parts exceed 5.5″ in diameter, your daily batch volume has outgrown 3 cubic feet of capacity, or you need 84 divider chambers for maximum part isolation at production scale.
The HZ-85 is the better fit if your parts are under 33″ long and under 5.5″ wide, your volumes are moderate, and your budget favors the smaller machine. The HZ-85 remains the most cost-effective high-efficiency machine for firearms, knife, and aerospace finishing.
