HZ-220 Centrifugal Barrel
Finishing Machine

The Full-Size Industrial Finishing Machine Where Long Barrels Meet Wide Diameter

The HZ-220 is the entry point to Mass Finishing’s High Capacity class—the largest centrifugal barrel finishers in the HZ-Series. Until this point in the lineup, manufacturers had to choose: long barrels (high-efficiency models like the HZ-60, HZ-85, HZ-175) or wide barrels (wide-diameter models like the HZ-120, HZ-160). The HZ-220 eliminates that compromise. Its barrels are both long (27.375″) and wide (11″ diameter), creating a part envelope of 26.5″ L x 10″ D that handles components other machines in the lineup cannot.

With 8 cubic feet of total capacity, the HZ-220 processes larger batch weights than any mid-frame machine. For automotive Tier 1 suppliers, metal fabrication shops, and rubber component manufacturers running continuous production, this capacity means fewer cycles per shift to move the same volume of parts through finishing—or the ability to process larger, heavier individual components that smaller machines can’t handle at all.

The HZ-220’s 15 HP main motor and Allen Bradley PowerFlex 525 drive deliver consistent rotation under heavy media loads. Variable frequency control reaches 135 RPM—lower than the high-efficiency models’ 225 RPM, but the combination of wider barrel radius and greater barrel mass generates comparable centrifugal force at the part surface.

What Makes the High Capacity Class Different

Throughout the HZ-Series, there’s a tradeoff between barrel length and barrel diameter. High-efficiency machines have long, narrow barrels for shafts and blades. Wide-diameter machines have short, deep barrels for housings and castings. The High Capacity class—the HZ-220 and HZ-330—is where that tradeoff disappears.

The HZ-220’s barrels are 27.375″ long AND 11″ in diameter. This means parts that are both long and wide—large automotive manifolds, oversized forged brackets, long rubber extrusions, wide fabricated weldments—fit without compromise. You don’t need to choose between barrel length and barrel width; the HZ-220 provides both.

At 135 RPM, the HZ-220 rotates slower than the smaller high-efficiency models. But the physics work in its favor: the wider barrel radius means each point on the barrel wall travels a longer arc per revolution, generating high centrifugal force at lower speeds. Combine that with 8 cubic feet of barrel volume and the ability to load heavier media charges, and the HZ-220 delivers aggressive material removal rates on dense, heavy parts that smaller machines would struggle to process effectively.

Why Heavy Industrial Manufacturers Choose the HZ-220

Both long and wide: 27.375″ x 11″ barrels

The HZ-220 is the first machine in the HZ-Series that combines long barrel length with wide barrel diameter. Parts up to 26.5″ long and 10″ in diameter fit without the tradeoffs that smaller machines impose—no choosing between length and width.

8 cubic feet of batch capacity

The largest batch volume below the HZ-330. For metal fabrication shops processing heavy steel weldments, automotive suppliers finishing large castings, and rubber manufacturers deflashing oversized molded components, 8 cubic feet means processing the heaviest, bulkiest parts in fewer cycles.

84 divider chambers

With 20 divider slots per barrel (21 chambers each, 84 total), the HZ-220 provides the same maximum part isolation as the HZ-175. Fabricated metal shops running mixed orders—steel brackets from one customer, aluminum housings from another, rubber gaskets from a third—keep every job separated in a single cycle.

15 HP motor for heavy batch weights

When barrels are loaded with dense ceramic media and heavy steel or iron parts, the 15 HP main motor maintains consistent rotation speed under full load. The Allen Bradley PowerFlex 525 drive provides precise speed control across the full 0–135 RPM range without power fade at heavy loads.

Air-driven cover lift (standard)

At 11″ diameter, the HZ-220’s barrels carry substantial media and water weight. The pneumatic cover lift removes barrel lids with a toggle switch, eliminating the manual lifting that would be unsafe and impractical at this machine’s scale.

Configurable for production-line integration

PLC touchscreen, internal vibratory separator, drain pan (114″ x 95″ footprint), infrared safety curtains, automatic door opener, centrifuge wastewater system, and media return system. The HZ-220 integrates into existing heavy-industrial production lines or operates as a standalone high-volume finishing cell.

HZ-220 Barrels

The HZ-220 features four hexagonal barrels measuring 27.375″ L x 11″ D—the first barrels in the HZ-Series that deliver both production-length and production-width in a single barrel. Removable lids are secured with cam locks, and the standard air-driven cover lift handles lid removal via toggle switch.

The Part Envelope That No Mid-Frame Machine Matches

The HZ-220’s 26.5″ x 10″ part envelope is unique in the lineup. It covers components that fall between the capabilities of the other machine classes:

  • Parts that are too wide for high-efficiency models (over 7″ diameter) AND too long for the HZ-120/160 wide-diameter models (over 20″)
  • Large automotive manifolds, transfer cases, and differential housings that are both long and wide
  • Fabricated steel weldments—brackets, frames, structural reinforcements—with complex profiles
  • Long rubber extrusions, wide molded seals, and large-format gaskets that need both length and diameter clearance
  • Heavy forged components—connecting rods, lever arms, large flange assemblies—that exceed mid-frame barrel dimensions

Part Separation With Up to 21 Chambers Per Barrel

Each HZ-220 barrel has 20 divider slots, creating up to 21 isolated chambers per barrel—84 separate compartments across all four barrels. Dividers are NYLOIL® cast nylon with built-in oil lubrication. A second barrel set enables continuous operation.

Best For

Wider but shorter parts; rubber deflashing; automotive production

Parts that are both long and wide; fabricated metal; high-volume automotive; large rubber

The longest and widest parts at the highest volumes

Choose the HZ-220 if your parts need both barrel length (over 20″) and barrel width (over 7″), your batch volume requires 8 cubic feet of capacity, or your part mix includes fabricated metal products, large automotive assemblies, and oversized rubber components.

The HZ-160 is the better fit if your parts are under 20″ long and you need the deepest barrel bore (11.8″ vs. the HZ-220’s 11″). The HZ-160 has a slightly wider bore and is more cost-effective for operations that don’t need the additional barrel length.

The HZ-330 is the step up if your parts exceed 26.5″ in length, you need more than 8 cubic feet of capacity, or your production volume has outgrown the HZ-220. The HZ-330 is the largest machine in the HZ-Series.
